Today I had an enlightening discussion with my family friend. He and I, sitting on the floor at the temple together, got to discussing the generation’s differences. What started off as light banter of comparing slang words eventually became a discussion on how to parent a generation you’re unable to understand or connect with.

My uncle (family friend), like my parents, grew up in a different culture than what his children, and I, grew up with in America. Thus, we think and act differently. Not wrong, just different.

At my age of 19, I’m thinking of mostly independence, growth, and freedom as most people my age do. I dream of adventures and new experiences all the time. These things feel very different than what it meant to our parents, who saw these as a chance for a new and better life for themselves and their family— not to replace their origin, but to be able to return to it with pride.

My uncle said that he often questions what he could do differently or better to connect with us. This really struck a chord within me.

Something I feel that too many kids my age say is for their parents to “leave them alone” and that they “don’t understand”. It’s harsh, and I’ve definitely told my parents that, but this conversation today made me realize that our parents do try. They try very hard.

I don’t think I’ve told my parents how grateful I am for them enough. Most parents probably don’t hear it enough. I don’t think we, as a younger generation, do enough to reassure our parents that we don’t intend to use the word “freedom” to leave home forever.

Dear parents, if you’re also asking how to “do better” with your kids, you’re doing it right 🙂

To my mom and dad, I love you both! Thanks for raising me, and you won’t get rid of me so easily 🙂
